The IAM

The IAM began with 19 men in a railroad yard in Atlanta, Georgia in 1888. At the time, those trade union machinists earned 20 to 25 cents for a 10 hour day.

135 years later, the IAM remains an organization comprised of – and working for – working people across the US, Canada, Puerto Rico and Guam. IAM Headquarters are located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. District Lodges are located regionally, including three large districts here in California. Underneath the District Lodges are Local Lodges, operated on a more localized level. IAM members run every level of the union – all the way up to the Grand Lodge (Headquarters) in this transparent, democratic organization.

From the start, the IAM has strived to include all its members in a democratic environment to make the best decisions for their working lives. All lodge business and finances are decided by the members. Contracts are voted up or down by the members. Leadership within the IAM believes it is in everyone’s best interest to have complete, pertinent and relevant information to ensure the best opportunity exists to make good decisions at the local, district and international level. Headquarters provides central support and retains a professional staff that works hard to advance the lives of working people. All of our departments are designed to help our members in every facet of their careers – from apprenticeships to workplace safety to retirement. The Strategic Resources department aids in contract and company research for collective bargaining – whether it’s the first contract with an employer or the 20th. In addition, the IAM has a full legal staff, as well as auditing and accounting to ensure the prudent use of your dues dollar and union resources. California is part of the IAM’s Western Territory, which is comprised of the 13 western states, inclusive of Alaska and Hawaii.
